Stuarts Draft hires Wright as new coach

Riverheads falls one game short
GREENVILLE – One game was all the Riverheads needed to secure the Group A Tournament berth but the season suddenly came crashing down on Wednesday afternoon when Goochland beat the Gladiators 4-2 in the Region B semifinals.
Gladiator coach Homes Tehrani walked back from the midfield after comforting his team. He had to keep wiping the tears from his eyes.
Goochland takes Group A tournament away from Wilson
FISHERSVILLE — Everything clicked for Goochland in its 6-2 Region B semifinal win over Wilson Memorial on Wednesday. “It all just fell into place,” Goochland coach Ron Spessard said. The Bulldogs were able to take control two minutes into the game when forward Luke Gall sent one into the net. The Bulldogs’ fancy footwork enabled them to win a majority of the one-on-one plays, however the Hornets’ defense was missing their key fullback, Kyle Inlow, due to illness.May 26, 2008

When the referee blew the double whistle to end the match, the Riverheads girls soccer team collapsed on each other on their end of the pitch. Then, after the quick on-field celebration, Kristen Moody and Kristin Shomo made a beeline for the stands, swung open the gate that separated the fans from the field and wrapped up Marsha Dattilio as tight as they could.
The tears began to flow. Finally, after four years and heartbreak, the Gladiators won a Region B match and got over that Bull Run District hump by defeating Clarke County 2-1 Monday.

Bison can’t hold off R’heads’ OT attack
GREENVILLE — Riverheads wanted it more. The Gladiators survived two deficits and several great saves by Bison keeper Brittney Roberts to win the Shenandoah District tournament championship, 3-2, in two overtimes.
Riverheads tried to get the action started, playing aggressive offense and getting multiple shots off at the goal.
Jackson falls to Wilson in 2 OT
FISHERSVILLE — Wilson Memorial almost saw its tournament championship hopes disappear in six minutes on Thursday afternoon. The Green Hornets led 2-0 and looked to have the Shenandoah District tournament boys soccer championship well in their grasp, until two Stonewall Jackson goals in the final six minutes sent the match into overtime. It took two five-minute overtimes for Wilson to reclaim the lead 3-2 and the trophy.May 21, 2008
Giants finish perfect S. Valley season with tourney win
Waynesboro coach Bill Meicke pumped his fists and jumped out from the coaches box after the Little Giants soccer team was crowned the Southern Valley District tournament champs, routing Stuarts Draft 5-0 Wednesday night in the tournament championship game.
With the win the Little Giants finished with a perfect 10-0 Southern Valley District record. The Little Giants will head into the Region III tournament as the No. 1 seed from the district and will host a team to be announced.

The smooth soccer rhythm of Waynesboro took it to a 5-0 win over Rockbridge County on Monday in the semifinal round of the Southern Valley District tournament.
The Little Giants’ passing game defeated the Wildcats on every level. Waynesboro’s speed, aggression and especially communication commands respect on the field.

The Cougars fought a worthy opponent in the Southern Valley Tournament on Friday night, winning 2-1 in four overtimes and defeating the No. 1 seed Fort Defiance. Lee came back from a goal deficient and netted three more during the last half of a match to reserve a spot against Stuarts Draft next Tuesday in the Southern Valley Tournament. Lee coach Andrew Green said his team had the right motivation against the Giants. It all started at Waynesboro. The Giants defeated Lee at home 5-1 in its first match. Nelson takes down Wilson
FISHERSVILLE — The game between Wilson Memorial and Nelson County came down to penalty kicks. A pair of fouls against the Hornets led to two goals for the Governors in the first half as Nelson County held on for a 3-2 win on the road Wednesday night. The Governors first goal came at the 30 minute mark in the first half when Hornet keeper Carter Moore left the goal to retrieve an arrent shot.May 13, 2008

GREENVILLE — Riverheads’ Brendan Desmond doesn’t show up in many game stats. But the Gladiator senior leaves his prints in nearly every part of the pitch.
Tuesday was no exception as the Gladiators won an important 2-0 match against visiting Buffalo Gap in Shenandoah District soccer action.

Key, Sundeen will play at Ferrum
STUARTS DRAFT — Sit back, relax and play it cool. That’s what Riverhead forward Chris Key and Stuarts Draft keeper Matt Sundeen demonstrated after they both committed to play soccer at Ferrum College next season.
“It feels good that somebody wants you to play for them,” Sundeen said. “I thought it would be fun and a good opportunity to play college soccer.”
Sitting with Sundeen was long-time friend Key, he was unruffled as he talked about the beginning of his colligate career.
Draft blanks Blazers in the rain
STUARTS DRAFT — Keeper Matt Sundeen said earlier in the week that he was going to finish his senior year for Draft well. After the Cougars 1-0 shutout against Spotswood on Friday night showed that he was true to his word.
“It was a hard fought game on both ends,” Sundeen said. “But our defense was there and we made it happen, especially defenders Josh Coble and Chris Mahanes, fought hard all night.”

Giants clinch Southern Valley’s top spot
Waynesboro’s Martin Mandujano made his last regular-season game a memorable one.
Less than a minute into the game, the lightning-quick Mandujano stole a Fort Defiance pass, broke away from the field and finessed a shot past Indians’ keeper Derek Uhler.

Wilson, Gap can’t break tie
FISHERSVILLE – Everything was there in the match between Wilson Memorial and Buffalo Gap on Tuesday, but after a double overtime the two teams stayed tied at 0-0. Both teams were equally matched in height, speed, and aggression, but Wilson had one thing over Gap, conditioning. Waynesboro pulled ahead early and held on late to maintain an 8-3 win over Robert E. Lee on Tuesday in Waynesboro. Less than three minutes into the game, Mark Ostrander scored on a Martin Mandujano assist to give the Little Giants a 1-0 advantage.
