FISHERSVILLE — The game between Wilson Memorial and Nelson County came down to penalty kicks. A pair of fouls against the Hornets led to two goals for the Governors in the first half as Nelson County held on for a 3-2 win on the road Wednesday night.
The Governors first goal came at the 30 minute mark in the first half when Hornet keeper Carter Moore left the goal to retrieve an arrent shot. Moore slid to smother the ball, in the process raising his leg into the opponent. The foul also netted a yellow card for Moore, meaning that Philip Congleton would have to play keeper for one play — the Luke Longanecker penalty kick. Congleton guess the kick correctly, but the ball sailed just out of his reach to the left and into the back of the net.
Another foul in the box by the Hornets set up another Governor penalty kick with just over eight minutes to play in the first half. Daniel Eggleston hammered the kick home to the back of the net, just to the right of keeper Moore.
“I told the boys, ‘We can’t call the game’,” Wilson coach Kyle Congleton said. “The officials see what they see. They make the call and we just have to come out and play.”
The Hornets came out to play in the second half, taking charge of the ball and playing aggressively, keeping the ball off Nelson’s half of the pitch most of the half.
“I’m not a believer in changing my game plan. We execute a 3-5-2, possess the ball, pass the ball, and keep it simple,” coach Congleton said. “We tried to overcomplicate it early on because we were nervous, I think.”
A Matt Thomas goal for Wilson fired up the team and the home fans, putting Wilson down only one goal.
A corner kick sailed into the open where only Thomas was standing. He was able to bend the ball through a mob of green, white, and yellow to find the back of the net.
Longanecker added another goal for the Governors, attempting to put the game away.
The Governors moved the ball into the open field, resulting in a two-man footrace won by Longanecker with the result showing on the scoreboard.
The Hornets Quinton Knott was able to cut the lead back to one when he released on a kick from outside the box, bending it right over the keeper Phillips’ head, barely making it into the top left corner of the goal to make the score 3-2.
“It was a good test for us going into regional play,” coach Congleton said.
Wilson starts the district tournament next Tuesday when they will play on the home pitch against a lower seeded team.
