Fielding, hitting, gossiping, it’s all the same — just a normal group of girls, besides the fact that they are a state championship team on its way to compete in the 2008 National Invitational Tournament in Toms River, N.J. this weekend.

Wilson knocked out of tournament FISHERSVILLE — Last year Buckingham was the team fighting its emotions while Wilson Memorial celebrated. On Wednesday afternoon, the roles reversed. The Knights, knocked out of the Region B tournament last season by the Green Hornets, entered Wednesday’s semifinal round prepared for Wilson’s offensive attack and pitching ace, Summer Ramsey. One two-run inning earned the Knights some revenge, a 2-0 win and Group A tournament berth.

Hornets dismantle Page County
Hornets dismantle Page County BRIDGEWATER — All season long, Wilson battled with Page County and Luray on the Shenandoah District’s ladder of success. But in the district tournament championship game Thursday, the Green Hornets clearly emerged on the top rung. Wilson’s 12-1 victory over Page was a masterful blend of pitching, hitting, baserunning and defense and gave the Hornets the tournament championship trophy to go with their regular season championship.

Wilson advances to finals
In Bridgewater, fresh off a playoff game with Page County that clinched the regular season Shenandoah District title on Monday, the Wilson Memorial softball team marched on through the tournament blanking Stonewall 6-0 at Bridgewater College. The semifinal win against the Generals sets up a rematch with the Panthers tonight for the Shenandoah District tournament title. No Region B berths are on the line in tonight’s game at 5 p.m. at Bridgewater College, with both teams wrapping up their spots. Wilson will enter the Region B tournament as the No. 1 seed.

No tears streamed down the face of Waynesboro softball for the last four seasons. Instead, Little Giant hurler Brittnie Siron forced a disappointed smile. After spending every game in the pitcher’s circle since her freshman year, the senior’s best chance at sniffing regional play wafted away into the unseasonably cold May air.

Indians win Southern Valley tournament FORT DEFIANCE — Ten district wins and two trophies later, the Indians are ready for Region III. On Tuesday afternoon the young Indians squad continued its dominance of the Southern Valley District, defeating Stuarts Draft 7-1 to capture the district tournament championship.

O’Donnell’s bat sinks Buffalo Gap To Stonewall Jackson catcher Kaitlyn O’ Donnell, the 12-7 victory over Buffalo Gap on Monday afternoon was special for two reasons. The win allowed the Generals to advance to the second-round of the Shenandoah District tournament and gave O’Donnell the opportunity show off her offensive skills to her grandfather.

After weeks of sorting the Shenandoah District finally has a softball champion. In the final game of a three-team, two-game playoff, Wilson Memorial got its revenge on Page County, winning the regular season Shenandoah District championship 2-1 on Monday afternoon at Eastern Mennonite University.

Cougars’ rally stops Waynesboro STUARTS DRAFT — Stuarts Draft will get to play at least one more game at home. With the Southern Valley District’s No. 2 Region III seed on the line the Cougars needed a late rally against Waynesboro to lock up a first-round region home game. Two Cougar runs in the sixth gave Draft a 7-6 win over the Little Giants.

Waynesboro is ready for the S. Valley tournament after win
Now Waynesboro believes it has the confidence, momentum and ability to move forward in the Southern Valley District tournament that begins on Friday. “The girls are getting focused with the district tournament coming up,” said Waynesboro coach Jason Aleshire. Hosting the final regular season game of the year, the Little Giants put together seven strong innings to knock off Harrisonburg 11-4 in non-district action, while only committing one error. Unlike in past games the Little Giants played consistent ball from the start.

Crowded at the top FISHERSVILLE — Wilson Memorial’s road to the regular season Shenandoah District title was blocked by Page County Wednesday afternoon as the Panthers blanked the Green Hornets 7-0 to set up a three-way tie for the top spot with Page and Luray. After edging Luray 1-0 the day before, Wilson’s championship destiny lay in its own hands.

Stuck together FISHERSVILLE A joke and a handshake is all Wilson softball pitcher Summer Ramsey needed when she would feel a bit ruffled in the pitcher’s circle. The one person to offer that handshake and laugh was best friend Leah Pagett who happens to be her long-time catcher.

Waynesboro rally stops R.E. Lee
Robert E. Lee jumped out to an early lead but Waynesboro held its own to stay in the game and take the lead right when it counted. The Little Giants scored three runs in the sixth inning and held off the Lee Ladies in the top of the seventh to pick up a 7-6 win in their final Southern Valley District game of the season, while gaining some confidence before the district tournament.

Indians crowned FORT DEFIANCE — Stuarts Draft’s early mistakes helped Fort Defiance clinch an 8-6 victory and, more importantly, the Southern Valley District title on Wednesday. The first inning started out rough for the Cougars, giving up errors and runs. After Fort walked Draft’s leadoff batter, Amber Christy, they quickly made up for it with a double play on the next batter, Lindsay Iseli. Another quick out and the Indians were ready for the plate.

Wilson is back on track GREENVILLE — A day after suffering its first loss of the season Wilson Memorial rebounded to take down one of their biggest rivals on the diamond in dominating fashion. The Green Hornets picked up a 15-0 mercy-rule-shortened win against Riverheads on the road Thursday, putting their 2-1 loss to Luray on Wednesday behind them.

Wilson handed its first loss FISHERSVILLE — Wilson Memorial’s dream season took a slight detour Wednesday as Luray came in and delivered a 2-1 loss to the previously undefeated Green Hornets in a Shenandoah showdown. The game came down to the narrowest of margins as the Bulldogs scratched out a run in the top of the seventh and held on in the bottom of the inning to keep their lead over the Hornets and stay at the top of the district.

Fort passes the test FORT DEFIANCE — The No. 1 softball team in the Southern Valley did exactly what they wanted to on a rare Saturday afternoon game in Fort Defiance. In an effort to gauge their abilities against a higher-caliber opponent, the Indians took on William Monroe in a battle of two possible regional tournament-bound teams. With a deceiving 6-6 overall record, the Dragons kept the Indians backed into a corner for most of the game, but Fort’s fundamental base running and powerful defense held on for a 3-0 non-district win.
