STUARTS DRAFT — A huge first inning said it all for Stuarts Draft during the Cougars’ 12-4 victory over Waynesboro on Tuesday night.
The Little Giants took an early lead in the top of the first on back-to-back hits by Norah Curtis and Erin Langley. Langley was tagged out when Kayla Bartley grounded into a fielder’s choice. Bartley was able to score on a sacrifice fly by Courtney Painter to give the Little Giants a 2-0 lead going into the bottom half of the inning.
The first four Cougar batters reached base and scored thanks to four Little Giant errors. Amber Christy led off for the Cougars with a single to centerfield. Lindsey Isell reached base on an error by the third baseman, followed up by singles from Courtney Lucas and Sabrina Desper. Tabitha Bowman’s triple scored three runs givving the Cougars an 8-2 lead.
Stuarts Draft coach Michelle Campbell was pleased with the Cougars’ first inning performance.
“It kind of gave us a little bit of a cushion to just relax and play our game and not stress so much about them being ahead,” Campbell said.
Errors hurt the Little Giants throughout the game, letting the Cougars off of the hook and allowing them to score runs.
“We have to forget the mental mistakes and errors and come back and play ball,” Waynesboro coach Jason Aleshire said. “There is always that one inning and today it was the beginning of the game.”
The Little Giants tried to get back into the game, but the Cougar lead was too much to surmount.
“We started thinking mentally,” Aleshire said. “They got their heads back in the game and after that we calmed down and had only three errors the rest of the game.”
Cougar pitcher Erin Brown pitched to her defense, striking out one, but got out of numerous jams late in the game by forcing the Little Giants to put the ball in play. The Little Giants had many chances to close the gap on the scoreboard heading into the fourth inning down 8-4. Over the rest of the game, Waynesboro stranded six runners on base without scoring any.
Bowman led Stuarts Draft (6-5, 3-1 Southern Valley) going 2-for-3 with a double and triple, three RBI, and two runs scored.
Waynesboro (4-8, 1-4 Southern Valley) was paced by spark plug Norah Curtis. Curtis went 3-for-4, with two runs scored, and two stolen bases.
