FORT DEFIANCE
High School is over for Brittany Davidson. The highly touted first baseman and pitcher for Fort Defiance has left the reservation and will be on her way to play college ball.
But before she leaves Augusta County, Davidson made an appearance at the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star softball game Thursday at Christopher Newport University.
“Yeah, I’m excited to be able to compete with different athletes from all over the state,” Davidson said before leaving for the game.
The recent graduate was one of two players selected from the Rockingham and Augusta area to participate in the game, which features players from Group A, AA and AAA. Turner Ashby shortstop Hillary Rees hit her way onto the ballot with a .600 batting average in her senior year.
Knights coach Craig Miller also nominated Davidson. During the selection process, Indians coach Max Hill was not there to pen Davidson’s name on a ballot, but Miller was. He didn’t hesitate to add the Division II Lenoir Rhyne College recruit to the list.
“I’ve seen her play and she’s very good. Her coach couldn’t be there, but I knew that she should be on the ballot and I voted for her,” Miller said.
Davidson is still surprised about her nomination.
“It kinda surprises me that I’m one of the players going. I know that it’s going to be tough because of the athletes that will be there,” Davidson said Monday. “There was a girl that should have been picked last year and she wasn’t, so I’m surprised that I got it.”
But she’s not too worried about the pressure or the limelight.
“During my last four years at Fort, I really grew as a varsity player. I think that this will get me more used to college pitching,” Davidson said. “The competition is kinda weak around here.”
The East team extended its winning streak to 11 on Thursday morning, defeating the West 6-1.
At Fort, Davidson acknowledged support came early for her.
“I’ve been on the varsity team here since I was a freshmen. I met a lot of different girls here; I think I used them for my role models,” Davidson said. “That really helped me grow at Fort. And to be picked to be in an all-star game is a big honor.”
