SUMMIT POINT, W.Va. – The local Skyline Girl’s 18-under softball squad recently captured the Virginia Babe Ruth 18-Under Championship held in Summit Point, W.Va.
The team dominated the event, defeating host Summit Point 10-0 in the opener and then blasting Varina 17-2 in the semifinals.
Skyline won the championship with a 9-0 blanking of Summit Point in the final.
For the tournament, pitcher Ali Painter, a graduate of Riverheads High School, won all three games, giving up just five hits in 15 innings. She struck out 14 batters. Painter was also a threat at the plate with five hits and five runs scored. For her efforts she was named Game 1 Most Valuable Player and State Tournament MVP.
Leah Pagett and Danielle Layman, both Wilson Memorial graduates, were named Game 2 and Game 3 MVPs respectively. Each contributed six hits in the tournament.
Stuarts Draft player Cadie Loan and graduate Sabrina Desper added five hits apiece while Wilson Memorial graduate Sarah Toman added four hits in just two games.
Skyline will earn a first-round bye in the Southeast Regional Tournament to be held in Wilson, NC the week of July 16-20.
