Ready for the next step It will never end. The hard work, the passion and drive to be the best. Shawnte Woodson pushes herself to keep tennis pumping through her blood. That means there is no time to rest for the recent Waynesboro graduate. This summer she will be teaching tennis and playing in tourneys before she packs up her racquet for Hollins University, a NCAA Division III school outside of Roanoke.

Al Hite wore his signature gold tennis racquet earring and an “I love tennis” key holder around his neck during the National Junior Tennis Camp on Monday at Ridgeview Park. Nothing had changed for Hite, except his job title.

Wilson falls to George Mason FISHERSVILLE — Wilson Memorial was prepared to avenge a 5-1 regional loss to George Mason during the 2007 season and after singles, the Hornets looked good to meet their goal, up 4-2. But the Hornets didn’t quite have enough falling, 5-4 after the doubles. “Somebody has to go home,” Wilson coach Marcy Baker said. “We gave them a run for their money. We knew they were going to be tough and we just came up on the short end of the stick.”
Gap’s Coon beats hurting Repper
FISHERSVILLE — Buffalo Gap’s Rachel Coon, the Shenandoah District tennis champion, took to the court against Michelle Repper of George Mason only minutes after the George Mason-Wilson Region III team match had ended. Coon was fresh, but Repper was warmed up, having played two matches already but something had to give.

Indians move on in regionals
Fort Defiance pulled ahead in the early matches and was able to hold on late in doubles to pick up a 5-4 win over Lord Botetourt in regional quarterfinal action Monday afternoon. Kayla Pleskonko gave the Indians the early lead after a sweeping 6-0, 6-0 win over Jennifer Brogan of the Cavaliers in less than thirty minutes at number five singles.

Woodson, Berry claim doubles championship FORT DEFIANCE – The second-round of the Southern Valley championship proved to be a nail-biter in the boys’ singles Saturday afternoon. Rockbridge’s Dominik Lehmann dominated during the regular season and won the championship on Saturday defeating Stuarts Draft’s Scott Nelson 6-4 in the last set.

Rockbridge’s Dominik Lehmann, Stuarts Draft’s Scott Nelson, R.E. Lee’s Rachel Obenschain and Draft’s Jessica Miller all advanced to the Southern Valley District tennis championship rounds Friday at Fort Defiance.

Wilson tops district doubles
Wilson tops district doubles FISHERSVILLE – Wilson Memorial dominated district play on Thursday, with both the boys and girls doubles teams winning Shenandoah District tournament championships. In the first round for the girls, Wilson’s Christine Coffield and Jamie Stark thrashed Riverheads’ Ashley Sorrells and Mary Martin 8-1. Buffalo Gap’s Rachel Coon, who was named the girls Shenandoah District player of the year, and Madison Benner beat Stonewall Jackson’s Lydia Foltz and Conner Shirley in a tiebreaker 13-11. Wilson’s pair then defeated Gap in the championship round 6-2, 6-2.

Coon, Howard win Shenandoah singles
In Fishersville, Buffalo Gap’s Rachel Coon and Riverheads’ Isaac Howard both won Shenandoah District singles tournament titles on Wednesday night. Coon defeated Wilson’s Hannah Shields 6-1, 6-0 in the championship round. She reached the finals after beating Riverheads’ Mary Martin 6-0 in the semifinals. Shields beat Stonewall’s Lydia Foltz 4-2 in the semis.

Indians turn on the lights
FORT DEFIANCE — They are just lights sitting on top of a hill at S.G. Stewart Middle School that illuminate fenced in tennis courts, but to Fort Defiance girls tennis coach John Edgecomb and the rest of the Indian tennis program they are beacons, a sign of years of work. “What it does is it offer the community a place were parents and children can come out and do something and brothers and sisters can come out and do something and do it after normal work hours,” Edgecomb said.
