With a field of 14 drivers, the Virginia Mini Cup’s started racing action Saturday afternoon at Shenandoah Speedway in Page County.
Jason Adkins of Crimora led the qualifying in his Cusson Racing Dodge Charger with a time of 19.009, followed by Jason Moye at 19.124. As the green flag dropped Adkins, Moye and Kevin Berkstresser came charging out into a three-car draft and moved away from the rest of the field.
On lap 6 Tim Brown Jr. brought out the only caution for the entire race as he spun exiting Turn 2.
Adkins led until lap 18 when Moye got a run down the backstretch and took the lead a half lap later. Moye held on until the end and picked up the win followed by Adkins, Berkstresser, Travis Roach and Tim Brown completing the top-five.
The Baby Grand division was up next and Kevin Bush once again dominated the class to pick up the victory followed by Jason Lutz, Roger Freeze and Josh Reid.
Bush is also leading in the national points chase as the season winds down for the Baby Grand Division. The National Season’s ending race will be at Shenandoah Speedway on August 30.
The most exciting racing of the evening belonged to the Enduro class as they ran their 25-lap feature.
The field was set by qualifying times with Mike Ganoe on the pole, with Brian Smith alongside.
Smith, with Ganoe and RC Stotler, moved out front early on but lap traffic began to play a major part in the passing game.
As the white flag came out for the final lap, the two leaders spilt a lap car in Turn 2 with Ganoe going low, Smith taking the high side and lap car of Paul Clemons as the meat in the sandwich. With the checkered flag waving and fans cheering loudly, Ganoe edged past Smith for the win with Stotler finishing third
After a brief rain delay the U-car drivers took to the track with the field lined up three wide for the start. After a total field inversion, Beaver Dean was on the pole with Chad Turner and Glen Heatwole alongside on the front row.
As the green flag dropped the field took off with Keith Griffith diving to the inside of Dean in Turn 1.
By lap six the top-three cars were Griffith, Randy Good and David Turner. On lap eight Turner made his move and took the lead with Good close behind. Turner never gave up the point and crossed the stripe in first.
The Street Stocks took to the racing surface with only five cars making it back from a mini demo derby the week before. The night once again belonged to Sparky Staton as he picked up his seventh win of the season.
The Limited Late Model rounded out the evenings racing program as Brandi Breeden of Waynesboro was gunning for her third win in a row. But when qualifying was complete the results were not exactly as Breeden had hoped, as she could only muster a fifth-place starting position. Brian Purdham, of Harrisonburg, took the quick qualifying time of 16.278.
On lap 41 Breeden spun while coming out of Turn 2, collecting the cars of Roger Spenser and Purdham in the wreck. After further review, the race director determined that since Breeden and Skelly had been the cause of the accident, they would be sent to the rear of the field for the restart. Breeden’s car was beyond repair and she was finished for the evening but credited with a seventh place finish.
After the debris had been cleaned up and final pit stops were made, Cropp once again rocketed away from the field with Roger Spenser and Brian Purdham in tow and that’s how they finished, with Skelly and Billy Keyes rounding out the top five.
