FISHERSVILLE - It was all about teamwork Monday as Wilson Memorial beat Stonewall Jackson 25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 25-17 clinching the Shenandoah district title.
The win guarantees the Hornets (16-4, 8-1) a berth in the Region B tourney and a first-round bye in the Shenandoah District Tournament.
Only one game caused a problem for the Green Hornets as they fell waist deep into a comfort zone, losing the second game to the Generals.
The start of the second game looked to be a simple win for the Hornets until the Generals went on a unanswered seven-score run, with Stonewall's Heather Stout leading the way with two kills and an ace.
The Hornets were having some communication trouble as the ball fell in-between two of their key players, Christine Coffield and Tiffany Crosby. With the Hornets down 10-4, head coach Kim Claytor took a timeout to give the girls a pep talk.
"I told them to just relax, execute, pass, set, and the game will go their way," Claytor said.
Right after the timeout the Hornets scored on a hitting error by the Generals.
Claytor's pep talk worked - but only for the first serve.
The game continued to go in Stonewall's favor as the Generals allowed the Hornets to come within five points.
"I told them that they needed to keep the intensity in Game 1, take it to Game 2, and finish it in Game 3. They got too relaxed and just made mental mistakes," Claytor said.
That was the only trouble the Hornets had as they cruised past the Generals in the third and fourth games.
Everyone contributed to the win as Kala Guy led the team with 18 kills. Jessica Arbogast and Noel Bartley each added five kills and Tiffany Crosby added another four kills, one ace, and 10 assists.
Christine Coffield was the star at the service line with 10 consecutive service points, including eight aces, at the start of Game 1. Throughout the match, Coffield also had 17 assists, three kills, and another ace in Game 3.
Ashley Dotson had one ace and a dink for a point in the first game and was honored in the Senior Night ceremony before the game.
