COVINGTON — The pre-game festivities of the 60-yard dash and home run derby were some of the most exciting events at Valley Baseball League All-Star game on Sunday afternoon.
The scouts were out with stopwatches and legal pads taking in all the action, while fans of all teams cheered from various sections of the bleachers watching their favorite players.
The first heat of the 60-yard dash featured two Generals Jacke Healey and Mark Dvoroznak. When manger Lawrence Nesselrodt dropped his hat for the single start and Healey and Dvoroznak took off across the outfield finishing neck-and-neck as the scouts appeared delighted by the times. Woodstock Adalberto Santos won the 60-yard dash, finishing in six minutes, 48 seconds.
In the home run derby Healey led the field of sluggers with two home runs in the first round of the contest and advanced to the semifinals. Healey punched his ticket to the finals, hitting four homeruns in his final five outs.
Luray’s Adam McClain belted three homers in the semis, but was eliminated by teammate Jeff Jefferson, who smashed six home runs.
Jefferson was too tough after finding his grove in the second round, defeating Healey 3-1 to become the 2008 Valley Baseball League’s home run champion.
