Heizer out scores Jackson
GREENVILLE - It was a half that left Riverheads coach John Corbett scratching his head. The Gladiators, hosting No. 6 Stonewall Jackson in the first round of the Shenandoah District basketball tournament, struggled to a 24-24 halftime tie and the only offense came from senior post Jeremy Heizer. The 6-5 Heizer carried the Red Pride on his shoulders scoring all but two of the Gladiator's first-half points. Riverheads knocked the Generals from the tournament with a 51-47 win.

Bison down Stonewall to win Shenandoah District regular-season title
On Friday, Stonewall Jackson opened the door for Buffalo Gap to take the Shenandoah District girls regular season championship. Monday night at Turner Ashby High School, the Bison stampeded through it and slammed it shut with a 49-37 victory in the first-place playoff game.

Lee Ladies punch tickets to Region III
STAUNTON - During Robert E. Lee's pre-game warm-ups, music blared from the overhead speakers before the Lee Ladies danced the way to the Region III tournament with a 64-54 win over Stuarts Draft. The Cougars had to fight fierce blocking from R.E. Lee in the first quarter and early foul trouble almost buried them in the first half. Stuarts Draft only recorded nine points in the first half to Lee's 15.
Waynesboro stomps Rockbridge
Tierra Howard-Berry's bucket at the buzzer completed a feat that was unimaginable one year ago - it put every Waynesboro player in the scorebook.

Lee wins Southern Valley
Stuarts Draft ' It's the first time ever that R.E. Lee wrestling has done it - winning a district title. The Leemen were crowned Southern Valley District champs on Saturday afternoon at the Southern Valley Tournament with 195 points, finishing 46 points ahead of district powerhouse Fort Defiance.
Mary Baldwin upsets No. 1 Methodist
In Staunton, with its whole roster of seven available, the Mary Baldwin basketball team scored a huge upset over Methodist University on Saturday afternoon and broke a four-game losing streak.
County grapplers win gold
FISHERSVILLE - Six Augusta County wrestlers earned their way to championships at Saturday's Region B Southern Sectionals and a host of other local grapplers did well enough to advance to next Saturday's Region B Finals at Buffalo Gap.

QUICKSBURG - At the beginning of the week Buffalo Gap's girls basketball team was looking at a likely second-place finish in the Shenandoah District, but an upset of Group A No. 4 Stonewall Jackson by Luray on Thursday night swung the door open for the Bison to pull into a tie for the district's top spot.

Wilson Memorial's girls basketball team defeated Page County 73-66 in its last game of the season on Friday night.

Fishburne fights off Grace
Staunton ' Fishburne came out on top with a 65-54 hard fought win over Grace Christian on Thursday. The Caissons' zone defense may have worked in their last game against Roanoke, but the Warriors' outside shooting caused havoc amongst the Caissons. The Warriors took their time on offense, worked the ball around, and sank choice shots.

FISHERSVILLE - Wilson Memorial didn't lead until it had to in its final game of the regular season. The Green Hornets were outrebounded, outshot and outscored for three-and-a-half quarters before their rival Riverheads hit a mental roadblock in the last game before the two teams start all over again in the Shenandoah District tournament.
Waynesboro girls take down Cougars
STUARTS DRAFT ' It wasn't your typical post-game handshake.
Giants get No. 2 seed
For one quarter Stuarts Draft shut down the Southern Valley's District leading scorer. After that, Nick Gore went ballistic and the rest of the Little Giants followed.

Wilson Memorial let a chance to move into a tie for first place slip through its fingers in the fourth quarter as visiting Page County grabbed control of the Shenandoah District regular-season title with an exciting 53-50 win Monday night over the Green Hornets.

The seniors decided the game for Waynesboro on Monday night, winning 71-49 over Rockbridge County en route to the Southern Valley District title - the Little Giants' first such hardware since 1991.
