The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of February, is exhibiting in the Cabell/Arehart Gallery the paintings of Sigrid Eilertson. Sigrid is a mixed media artist including works in oil painting, murals, collage, mask making, and textiles. She has earned a BA in Fine Arts from the College of Charleston (1993) and a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy from Marylhurst College (1998) in Portland Oregon. For eight years she worked as an art therapist on an inpatient psychiatric unit with both adolescents and adults. Sigrid incorporated her personal growth experiences along with spirituality and multicultural elements into her art. Vibrant use of color is a key unifying element in her work. Eilertson likes to paint surrealistic images of creatures that straddle the line between the realistic and the fantastic, like larger-than-life goddesses and wild animals. She always works in a series, and is presenting the entire Chinese Zodiac for this exhibition. An opening will be held Saturday, February 1, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come, meet, and talk to this remarkable artist.

In the Hallway Gallery, the Blue Ridge Virginia Art Education Association exhibition is showcasing its members from the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. The exhibit is an intriguing look into the creative process of educators. It is a rich tapestry of artwork that represents lives involved in the daily practice of nurturing young artists who will determine the evolution of art in the future! The exhibit at SVAC is the beginning of a traveling exhibit that goes to northern Virginia and then to the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center in Charlottesville. It is part of an initiative that gives art educators the opportunity to earn recertification points toward their licensure for the state of Virginia. Educators will be present at the opening to answer any questions about their work.

In the Members’ Gallery, the theme “RED” will be interpreted in a variety of media and creative ideas by SVAC member artists.
